Bolognesi, B., Ribeiro, E., & Codato, A.. (2023). A New Ideological Classification of Brazilian Political Parties. Dados, 66(2), e20210164.
Just as democratic politics changes, so does the perception about the parties out of which it is composed. This paper’s main purpose is to provide a new and updated ideological classification of Brazilian political parties. To do so, we applied a survey to political scientists in 2018, asking them to position each party on a left-right continuum and, additionally, to indicate their major goal: to pursue votes, government offices, or policy issues. Our findings indicate a centrifugal force acting upon the party system, pushing most parties to the right. Furthermore, we show a prevalence of patronage and clientelistic parties, which emphasize votes and offices rather than policy.

Political Ambition and Career Choices in The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies: A Three-Dimensional Analysis Proposal
Abstract:
We employed a three-dimensional analysis model to investigate the influence of (1) institutional rules, (2) the sociopolitical profile, and (3) the level of political professionalization among Brazilian parliamentarians on their career choices.
Our data focuses on federal deputies elected in 2014, sourced from the Superior Electoral Court.
Utilizing binomial logistic regression models, we examined the combined influence of institutional, social, and professional variables on political ambition. We analyzed the electoral decisions made by these parliamentarians in the 2016 and 2018 elections. Our findings revealed intricate interactions among these dimensions, offering novel insights into the patterns of career choices.
We identified a strong correlation between political ambition and political status, with parliamentarians who have more established careers displaying a greater inclination to pursue ambitious political objectives. Additionally, our study highlights variations in career choices and electoral success, contingent on the level of government these individuals aspire to and the specific electoral system they compete in (whether majoritarian or proportional). Regarding the intersections between political ambition and sociopolitical profile, we found that only a lower level of educational attainment affects regressive ambition.
Our findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of political ambition, encompassing dimensions that remain underexplored in the scholarly literature, such as political professionalization and the sociopolitical profile of parliamentary elites.

Estabelecidos, outsiders e renovadores: mensurando a lealdade partidária dos deputados federais eleitos em 2018
Abstract:
We analyzed the social and political profile and political behavior in roll-call votes of deputies elected to the 56th Legislature of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies (2019-2023).
The deputies were divided into three groups: The established (those who were not in their first term); the outsiders (those who were in their first term); and the Renovators (outsiders who were members of supra-party political renewal organizations).
The objective was to verify significant differences existed among the groups and whether the Renovators exhibited peculiarities in their parliamentary behavior.
The results showed that the groups presented differences in terms of age, race, party ideology, and campaign finance patterns. However, through analysis of mean differences, the article concludes that there is no difference among the average party loyalty indices of the parliamentarians in each group, indicating very similar behavior among the deputies.
This finding undermines the alleged novelty brought by the wave of political renewal in 2018 in Brazil.

Political Professionalization: A Multidimensional Analysis of Brazilian Federal Deputies
Introduction: The Political Science literature lacks a universally accepted criterion for evaluating the degree of professionalization among politicians. This article builds upon an index originally designed to assess the level of professionalization within the United Kingdom Parliament and subsequently refines and customizes it to suit the context of Brazilian federal deputies elected in the year 2014.
Materials and Methods: The original professionalization index consists of four key dimensions: 1) level of commitment to a political career; 2) type of professional background prior to a parliamentary career; 3) age at which individuals entered Parliament (a proxy for life experience); and 4) political ambition. After applying this index to Brazilian parliamentarians who served in the 55th legislature, we conducted comparative tests to ascertain whether parliamentarians with higher political status exhibited a higher level of political professionalization when contrasted with their peers. To identify the high-status group, we relied on the classification by the Inter-Union Department of Parliamentary Assistance (DIAP), an organization that publishes an annual list of the top 100 Heads of the National Congress.
Findings: Our study revealed statistically significant differences in favor of the most eminent parliamentarians. DIAP-awarded parliamentarians exhibited higher levels of professionalization than their counterparts in three out of the four dimensions analyzed (commitment to a political career, life experience, and political ambition).
Discussion: With some necessary refinements, the professionalization index has proven to be consistent and effective in gauging the disparities between DIAP-awarded parliamentarians and their counterparts. The utilization of a multidimensional model is essential insofar as it not only enables us to define who qualifies as a professional politician, but also measure the extent of professionalization of a given politician.
