Bolognesi, B., Ribeiro, E., & Codato, A.. (2023). A New Ideological Classification of Brazilian Political Parties. Dados, 66(2), e20210164.
Just as democratic politics changes, so does the perception about the parties out of which it is composed. This paper’s main purpose is to provide a new and updated ideological classification of Brazilian political parties. To do so, we applied a survey to political scientists in 2018, asking them to position each party on a left-right continuum and, additionally, to indicate their major goal: to pursue votes, government offices, or policy issues. Our findings indicate a centrifugal force acting upon the party system, pushing most parties to the right. Furthermore, we show a prevalence of patronage and clientelistic parties, which emphasize votes and offices rather than policy.

The paper analyzes Brazilian Federal Deputies elected in 2014 and rewarded as “Heads” of Congress, i.e., those congressmen indicated by the Intersyndical Department of Parliamentary Assistance (DIAP) as the most active in the 55th legislature in Brazil (2015-2018).
Considering DIAP’s awards as an indirect indicator of relevance and influence in the Legislature, this study investigates the relationship between being or not a “Head” of the National Congress and the political ambition of the deputy (whether progressive, static, or regressive) and then if this political capital becomes into competitive advantages in subsequent electoral contests (2016, 2018 and 2020).
Chi-square independence tests showed that there is an association between ambition type and political capital in the 2018 general election (p < 0.001) and 2020 municipal election (p < 0.031), but not in the 2016 municipal election (p < 0.450).
Relative risk and odds ratio tests revealed that there is no positive effect between being classified as a congressional political leader and good electoral performance for the group under analysis.

A typology of right-wing politicians in Brazil: an attempt toward empirical classification.
abstract
There has been a common assumption as of late that the political right has grown in Brazil since 2010. This is a complex phenomenon, as we do not seem to be before the customary political right. Alongside the right associated with major political parties historically connected to the dictatorial-military regime there are new types of parties and new political profiles on this side of the political spectrum. The objective of the article is to identify the different profiles of the Brazilian right-wing by means of an inductive typology, that is, a description grounded on significant empirical cases within this political family. We propose five different types to characterize politicians within Brazil’s right: the traditional politician of the right, the politician of the new popular right, the politician of the populist right, the politician of the neoliberal right, and the politician of the libertarian right. This is a heuristic model that should be improved in the light of new evidence.
