Bolognesi, B., Ribeiro, E., & Codato, A.. (2023). A New Ideological Classification of Brazilian Political Parties. Dados, 66(2), e20210164. Just as democratic politics changes, so does the perception about the parties out of which it is composed. This paper’s main purpose is to provide a new and updated ideological classification of Brazilian political parties. To do so, we applied a survey to political scientists in 2018, asking them to position each party on a left-right continuum and, additionally, to indicate their major goal: to pursue votes, government offices, or policy issues. Our findings indicate a centrifugal force acting upon the party system, pushing most parties to the right. Furthermore, we show a prevalence of patronage and clientelistic parties, which emphasize votes and offices rather than policy. keywords: political parties; political ideology; survey; party models; elections

[Paulo Pasta

The research accomplished a deep investigation into the thematic and methodological landscape of Brazilian Political Science (BPS), identifying the main areas of research and methodological approaches within the field. It analyzed 1849 PhD theses and Master's dissertations between 2013 and 2020, uncovering five distinct thematic communities and their methodological preferences. This study is important as it highlights the consolidation, specialization, and institutionalization of BPS, revealing a structured and diversified scientific community with a clear thematic organization and methodological coherence. The findings provide a foundation for understanding the current state of the discipline and suggest areas for further exploration, indicating BPS's maturity and its contribution to global political science discussions.

Project: The scientific field of Brazilian Political Science

A Scientometric Review of Global Research on Political Elites

[Donald Trump
photo: medium, 2017]

Political elites are a long-established research topic in the field of Political Science and Political Sociology.

Several traditional literature reviews have been published on the subject, discussing the most employed methodologies, outlining the research panorama in specific countries, or making comparative assessments of the state of the art.

In an attempt to acquire a clearer understanding of the intellectual landscape of the research on political elites, we performed a quantitative scientometric review of 921 papers published between 1958 and 2021 indexed in the Scopus database.

The results showed that the number of articles published has increased rapidly, especially since 2010.

The reference literature showed that political elites is a theme very closely associated with the performance of representative democracies.

An overview of this study area showed that the bibliography is first ordered by countries or regions and later by subject.

Among the many subjects discussed, studies about elites in former soviet nations stand out. As we look specifically into the production in Latin America, we find a research field structured around Chile and Brazil and a division between, on the one hand, Political Science studies and, on the other, Political Sociology studies heavily influenced by the French Sociology of Elites.

Political Science in Latin America: A Scientometric Analysis

Brazilian Political Science Review 2020 14 (3):e0007. DOI: 10.1590/1981-3821202000030005

Studies of Latin American political science are centered on analyses of national cases and are based on intellectual narratives about the institutional development and teaching of the discipline. In this article we take a different, more comprehensive and comparative approach. We distinguish and contrast two Latin American political sciences: one native to Latin America and published in journals from five countries in the region, and one foreign and published in journals from five countries outside the region. We use three types of bibliometric measures: 01. reciprocal citations in 23 academic journals indexed in the Scopus database; 02. co-occurrence of terms in titles and abstracts of 5,880 research articles published between 2006 and 2018; and 03. co-citations of authors in the bibliographies of said articles. The network of journals forms a well-defined archipelago with three clusters separated by language (English, Spanish and Portuguese). The community is divided along two main axes: political approaches versus sociological approaches. The study also points out that themes, authors, and methodologies are not significantly different between these two political sciences.
